CHANNEL ISLANDS BACKPACKING ADVENTURE – SANTA CRUZ ISLAND
Escape to One of California’s Most Remote Wilderness Areas

Join us for an unforgettable three-day backpacking adventure on Santa Cruz Island, the largest island in Channel Islands National Park. This trip takes you across rugged coastal landscapes, rolling hills, and dramatic ocean overlooks, offering a unique opportunity to experience the raw beauty of the “Galápagos of North America.”
Hike along the Del Norte and Montañon Trail, traversing from Del Norte Campground to Scorpion Campground while taking in panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, remote coves, and the diverse wildlife of this protected national park.
TRIP OVERVIEW
- Location: Santa Cruz Island, Channel Islands National Park
- Total Distance: 13.7 miles point-to-point
- Elevation Gain: 2,900 feet
- Trip Rating: Hard – This trip requires previous hiking experience and good physical condition. Expect steep inclines, exposed terrain, and uneven trails.

- Hikers with some backpacking experience
- Those looking to challenge themselves on a coastal island trail
- Past students of our beginner backpacking course
ITINERARY
- Day 1: Meet at the Ventura Harbor ferry terminal and take the Island Packers boat to Santa Cruz Island. Hike from Prisoners Harbor to Del Norte Campground and set up camp.
- Day 2: Pack up and hike along the Del Norte and Montañon Trail, crossing ridgelines and scenic coastal vistas before arriving at Scorpion Campground for the final night.
- Day 3: Explore the area before catching the return ferry back to Ventura Harbor.
A pre-trip virtual Zoom session will be held to review logistics, answer questions, and assist with preparation.
REQUIRED GEAR & ESSENTIALS
- Backpacking gear: backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, pillow, tent
- Food for all meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
- At least 2 liters of water (water sources are limited on the island)
- Hiking boots/shoes with good traction
- Weather-appropriate layers, including warm clothing for cold nights
- Headlamp or flashlight
- Trekking poles
- Personal prescription medications
- Toiletries and rain gear
- Sun protection: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm
- Utensils, mug, and snacks
GEAR & FOOD PACKAGES AVAILABLE
- Gear Rental Package: Includes backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, and bear canister.
- Food Package: Three days’ worth of backpacking meals and snacks.
MEET YOUR GUIDE
Nikki Taylor is an experienced outdoor instructor and hiking guide with over ten years of experience. She is a Wilderness First Responder, Leave No Trace Trainer, and certified in Maps & Navigation and food safety.
CANCELLATION POLICY
- Full refund available up to two weeks before the trip.
- No refunds within two weeks of departure, but tickets may be transferred to someone on the waitlist.
- Trips run rain or shine; inclement weather does not mean automatic cancellation.

Participants are encouraged to be up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations. If experiencing flu-like symptoms or recent exposure to COVID-19, please do not attend.
