Please wear a Vyshyvanka in support of Ukraine on May 19, 2022! ??
The Ukrainians are fighting for their land, freedom and a peaceful future, and we are extremely grateful to the people of the United States for standing with and supporting the Ukrainian nation in its hour of need. One of our symbols of independence is the unique Ukrainian vyshyvanka, the embroidered bright-colored shirt, that has carried us throughout the centuries, encoding our deep struggles, joys and hopes.
?? This year, World Vyshyvanka Day is more special than ever!
Wear a vyshyvanka to your workplace, school, daycare, club, lunch, meetings to show support for our men in the battlefields, our courageous people trying to go through their day one breath at a time while under heavy rocket shelling and destruction, our refugee mothers and children away from their homes, husbands and fathers. Show them that you see them, you care, that your heart is syncing with their hearts as you are wearing one of the most meaningful national symbols for Ukrainians.
?? Post your pictures on our Facebook page and tag Ukrainian San Antonio!
?? We would love to project images of San Antonio’s support for Ukraine to the world. This is a way, for all of us to show that beauty and life triumphs over death and destruction.
World Vyshyvanka Day is celebrated annually in more than 100 countries. The Ukrainian embroidered shirt is a sacred spiritual legacy of the Ukrainian people. Our ancestors believed that one could embroider a wish for health, love, fortune and well-being on a shirt. A geometric pattern in colorful threads was believed to have the power to protect a person from all harm. The Ukrainians have worn embroidered shirts at all times, even when they lacked their statehood, were forbidden to speak their language in the tight grip of the Soviet totalitarianism. Now, children are being christened in vyshyvankas, people are being married in vyshyvankas, volunteers are right now sewing vyshyvankas for our military that is defending our independence in East Ukraine. Today, an embroidered shirt is not only a symbol of Ukraine’s independence or identity, but also a symbol of the world’s support for our just fight for freedom, unity and peace!
