World Textile Day will be back in Saltford at Saltford Hall, Wedmore Rd, Saltford, Bristol, BS31 3BY on Saturday October 5th from 10 am to 4 pm. Diane and Magie (along with partners Jim and Bob) have been organising World Textile Days here in Saltford for the past 10 years and this year they are handing over the organisation of all World Textile Days to other members of the group while they take a rest and a back seat!
At 11 am, the special guest speaker is Dr Fiona Kerlogue. Fiona is an anthropologist, author, researcher and expert on South east Asia with a special interest in textiles. She has worked at The Horniman Museum and SOAS in London and will be giving us a talk on her many years of field research.
In the afternoon there will be two short talks by Diane Gaffney with “From the Artisans of Java to the quilters of Bristol” reflecting on the way that batik can be both a traditional craft as well as a beloved material for modern quilters, followed by Magie Relph : “A funny thing happened on the way to the market – Africa, fabrics and life on the road”, looking back on her career in Africa and on the UK textile scene.
Entry to World Textile Day is completely free to enter with just a small payment if you would like to see the talks. Tickets will be available on the door.
The Saltford Hall has very easy flat access with free parking around it. It is also very conveniently placed on the main bus route between Bath and Bristol. The local Community Association will be providing their usual great catering throughout the day.
The organisers Diane and Magie say “We will be in Saltford to hand over the organisation to the younger generation and to sell off some of our own textiles collected over a lifetime of travel in Asia and Africa. We hope you’ll come along to support our small businesses who in turn support small family businesses and makers in many parts of Asia and Africa.
World Textile Day is a very special small show with textile experts on hand to answer your questions and to tempt you with a fantastic market place of clothes, textiles, fabrics, tools, beads and much more. World Textile Days are always a great opportunity to meet up once a year with your fabric loving friends”
The stand holders attending are:
Susan Briscoe Designs – Japanese sashiko and stitching expert
The Running Stitches – textiles from India
Khayamiya – The Tentmakers of Cairo
Textile Traders – textiles from Southeast Asia – especially Thailand and Indonesia
Janice Gunner – indigo and shibori expert
Textile Treasures – textiles collected over a lifetime of travel
