The government has also attempted to table three pieces of restrictive legislations: a media ethics bill, a revised information act and a non-profit organization bill. These would all lead to greater regulation and surveillance, both online and offline.
What is the impact of all this on the national media landscape? Will the upcoming 14 May election usher in any changes in direction?
To mark World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO, in cooperation with the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT), is organizing a panel discussion to highlight how the current state of freedom of expression affects the work of journalists and more broadly the human rights situation in Thailand.
The programme will include a keynote speech on freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights by Joe Hironaka, the chief of communication and information at UNESCO’s multi-sectoral regional office in Bangkok
That will be followed by a panel discussion with:
Vitit Muntarbhorn, professor of law at Chulalongkorn University and UN special rapporteur on the human rights situation in Cambodia
Yingcheep Atchanont, programme manager, Internet Law Reform Dialogue (iLaw) – a civil society group engaging with the general public to promote democracy, freedom of expression and civil and political rights.
Jonathan Head, BBC Southeast Asia correspondent.
Thapanee Eadsrichai, veteran journalist and founder of The Reporter.
Moderator: Panu Wongcha-um, senior correspondent, Reuters, and FCCT past president.
Free and open to all. Food and beverages will be available. To book in advance, please call 02 652 0581, use the FCCT’s Facebook page or email [email protected].
