Famous 19th Century English author, Charles Dickens, made two trips to America. The first in 1842 was a fact-finding mission. The second in the winter and spring of 1867-1868 was a performing tour on which Dickens gave 76 dramatic readings, lively one-man shows of his public works from Boston to New York City to Washington and Buffalo among other venues. Noteworthy for Oneida County’s history, Dickens made an unscheduled 18-hour layover in Utica March 17-18 en route to performances in Albany. One literary critic has dubbed Dickens “the first superstar” of English-speaking literature, and his unexpected presence at Bagg’s hotel certainly caused quite a stir among the locals. Why Utica? That’s the topic of this Oneida County History Center documentary by filmmaker, Dennis Dewey, to premiere at the History Center on Saturday, March 18 with two showings, 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. (155 years to the day that Dickens checked out of Room #11 at Bagg’s Hotel). The event is FREE and open to the public.
