As part of commemorating World Ocean Day 2026, Sana Mare Organization Tanzania is organizing an island conservation event under the theme “Islands for Tomorrow: Clean, Conserve, Connect.” The event will take place at Makatumbe Island Marine Reserve and will bring together environmental organizations, community members, youth, conservation practitioners, and ocean advocates to take collective action for the protection of Tanzania’s coastal and marine ecosystems.
The program combines practical conservation activities with environmental education and networking opportunities. Participants will engage in a Beach Cleanup to remove marine litter from the island and surrounding shoreline, followed by a WABA (Waste Assessment and Brand Audit) exercise to collect data on the types and sources of waste found. The event will also feature an Eco Tour of Makatumbe Island Marine Reserve, providing participants with an opportunity to explore the island’s natural and ecological significance, as well as an Eco Dialogue Session where stakeholders can exchange ideas, experiences, and solutions for advancing marine conservation and sustainable ocean stewardship.
It is an opportunity to learn, connect, and strengthen our shared commitment to protecting marine ecosystems while fostering collaboration among organizations and individuals working towards a cleaner and healthier ocean.
