World Music Café presents its final celebratory ‘Dinner & Show’ event for this year on Friday 4 November 2022 at the Mt Lawley Bowling Club Function Room. Our final show includes two high calibre acts featuring the Praashekh Borkar ensemble (India) and Perth Choro (Brazil), plus a banquet of international cuisine by chef Nimrod Kazoom (Israel) and the World Music Café catering team.
Praashekh Borkar is a major Classical Indian artist, originally from Pune in India and from a distinguished family of highly accomplished Indian musicians. He began playing sarod at seven years old under the tuition of his father and guru Pt. Shekhar Borkar and won a national music scholarship and an All-India Gold medal for musical proficiency. He has performed at major cultural festivals throughout India, Singapore, Japan, Europe and Australia. Praashekh will perform a set of classical Indian music with brilliant tabla percussionist Sivakumar Balakrishnan, plus an innovative contemporary Indian Australian fusion with his new ensemble.
Led by Danilo Da Paz, Perth Choro is a talented group that have built a popular following for their lively take on the Brazilian traditional repertoire. Best described as ‘the New Orleans jazz of Brazil’, Choro is at the heart of all Brazilian music as a hybrid Brazilian street music, fusing European melodies with the rhythms of African origin. It was developed in the late 18th century in the big ballrooms of Portuguese colonised Brazil, when European dance music, and especially the polka, was the popular music of the time.
Chef Nimrod Kazoom is the mentor chef of the World Music Cafe kitchen team and brings his extraordinarily ‘tradition meets innovation’ creative cuisine to the bountiful World Music Café banquet. Nimrod trained and worked in Tel Aviv before relocating to Perth several years ago and has since built a massive following for his stunning artistic cuisine.
World Music Café is a social enterprise created by Multicultural Futures in 2019, with community partner United in Diversity, that provides training, employment, and community connection for the enterprise team of new migrant and refugee backgrounds. It has been described by the UWA Centre for Social Enterprise evaluation report as ‘An Oasis of Integration in Our Country’.
