Burnaby Lake Park - Nature House | Burnaby, BC
About this Event
Join passionate local bird guides as they share their knowledge and passion for birds while we wander through Burnaby Lake trails, ending at Piper Spit. We’ll listen for calls and songs, enjoy discussion on topics such as bird habitat and plumage, and share tips. With spring migration in full swing, this is a great time to see both seasonal visitors and local year-round species.
If possible, bring a pair of binoculars that will allow you to identify and enjoy distant birds easily.
We welcome everyone, including people with disabilities, people who are Black, Indigenous or People of Color (BIPOC), and people who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual (LGBTQIA+). We’ll be using Burnaby Lake Regional Park trails which are accessible to wheelchair-users, people who use mobility aids, or child strollers.
The 2026 theme for World Migratory Bird Day is Every Brd Counts - Your Observation Matters. It highlights the role of public participation in collecting data on migratory bird populations and their habitats and factors that impact their populations and contribute to our knowledge about how to protect them. Community science, ranging from backyard bird counts to large-scale coordinated surveys/schemes, provide information on species distribution, abundance trends, migration timing, and breeding success. This data is important to identify conservation priorities, and inform effective conservation action plans and strategies. By engaging individuals and communities in monitoring efforts, we not only gather scientific data but also build a deeper connection to nature, raise awareness about the challenges migratory birds face, and inspire direct conservation action. Two key apps to record and share your observations are eBird and iNaturalist.
Please note that advance registration is required. Space is limited. If you are no longer able to make it, we ask that you cancel your ticket so that someone else may attend.
