About this Event
The University of Albany Black, Indigenous, Latinx and People of Color (BILPOC) Faculty Advancement Initiative and The Center for the Elimination of Minority Health Disparities (CEMHD) in collaboration with Partners in Community Development Inc. BIPOC PEEEEEEK will host a one-day symposium that focuses on mental health in communities of color. The event will be held on World Mental Health Day, Thursday, October 10, 2024, from 8:30 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. in the ETEC building at UAlbany.
Echoing the World Health Organization's goals of mental health as a basic human right for all people, this symposium aims to raise awareness of mental health issues among BILPOC communities and mobilize efforts in the provision of mental health services. As the title of our symposium suggests, Amplifying Mental Health Wellness through the Lens of Equity: Technology and Human Rights, our panelists will highlight their work on mental health wellness, technology, and equity. The symposium will bring together local leaders, regional and national experts, community members and stakeholders for a day of learning and intentional interaction to educate employers and employees on essential aspects of mental health equity, and technology.
Target Audience:
Behavioral Health Providers, Social Determinants of Health and Health Equity Researchers, Community Stakeholders, Peer Educator, Law Enforcement, Parent advocates, Faith-based Leaders, Students, Social Workers, Counseling and Health Sciences Providers, Department of Health Providers/Practitioners.
Key Educational Learning Objectives/Outcomes
· Present opportunities to address the intersection of social determinants of health and behavioral health care through the lens of equity.
· Provide an overview of mental health in communities of color and highlight the diversity of needs related to prevention and provision of services.
· Discuss the impact of technology inequities and the digital divide has on mental health and across low-income communities.
· Identify individual actions to assist in the decrease of mental health racial inequality and mental health as a human right.
Teaching Methods:
This interactive session will combine a keynote address, two expert panels and interactive consensus building exercise that promotes dialogue among participants.
