The Great Exhibition, which took place in the Crystal Palace, is well known but the numerous other International Exhibitions, which were put on all over the world, are often completely unknown. Did you know that there were “Crystal Palaces” in other parts of the World, that unassembled elements of the Statue of Liberty were shown in Philadelphia and Paris, or that Mr Otis patented his lift at a New York Fair thus paving the way for the skyscraper? This lecture seeks to explain the impetus and ideas behind these extraordinary gatherings of items of trade with a special emphasis on furniture and the decorative arts. It concentrates on the major Exhibitions held in England, America and France between 1851 and 1900.
