Gateway's Producing Artistic Director, Sandra Hughes, has written thirteen original Irish mummer plays. Each produced by Gateway. They're considered works of "significant cultural merit" by The Ohio State University. And are part of OSU's Irish collection.
Gateway is one of the founders of the Network of Irish Cultural Centers of North America.
There's lots of physical and verbal comedy in a mummer show! Most of the characters wear tall straw masks. A notable exception is the doctor who is often costumed with a veil over his face and a tall hat. In his book, All Silver and No Brass, Henry Glassie says Irish mummers bring humor and hope to the community. They also promote
unity.
Gateway Performance Productions' programming is made possible in part by support from the Georgia Council for the Arts, the Fulton County Commissioners under the guidance of Fulton County Arts and the City of Atlanta - Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and individual contributors.
