There are only two mistakes you can make with world-building in your genre fiction tale. Believing you can't do it is the first, and the second is betting that you don't have to. See, readers plunk down cold hard cash every day to read fiction books. Why? Not to learn about the life they're already living, the world they're in now, that's for sure. To escape, to be taken—by you—elsewhere-or-when.And here's the thing—Readers want to be in this other world, but they have no intention of learning about it.
So, you have to be sneaky.
Bring a pad and pencil, your draft opening, the map, anything you've got to help you take notes on exactly how to build your tale's world right under the reader's noses. There will be writing exercises during this talk.
