About this Event
Where Color Comes From: Making Paint, Meaning, and Connection
9am - 12:15pm
includes School Tour
Presented by Iwonka Dziag, Evergreen Community School Teacher
Have you ever wondered—alongside children—where color comes from? Or looked to the land itself for inspiration and for the materials to paint with? The workshop opens with a visual and narrative presentation that introduces centuries-old natural paint-making practices from the Americas, with a focus on minerals and insects. Through classroom stories and personal research, a teacher-researcher shares how this work has unfolded alongside young children and been shaped through learning from Indigenous and local artists.
The presentation gives way to a hands-on studio experience. Together, we will source, process and transform color—like a cooking class for pigments—while reflecting on place, history, and relationship to land. Participants will experience the aesthetic pleasure of turning raw materials into watercolors and leave with samples of locally sourced, hand-processed paints, along with renewed inspiration to explore natural materials with children as part of a living, shared tradition.
