The Odyssey of Tarot: History and Symbolism
In the preface to his groundbreaking treatise, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, Arthur Edward Waite argues that the symbolism of Tarot should be “interpreted according to the Laws of Grace rather than by the pretexts and intuitions of that which passes for divination.” While this was the most sophisticated approach of his time, modern scholars suggest that a prominent method for deciphering the symbolic imagery of the Tarot is through methodologies of art history, psychoanalysis and esotericism.
Originating from China, traveling along the Silk Road to the Middle East, passing through Egypt, and eventually reaching Italy and the rest of Europe, the Tarot has undergone significant adaptations and modifications, emerging as a product of cultural fusion. Since the 18th century, when French occultists reconceptualized this game of cards as a symbolic representation of ancient wisdom, various esoteric orders have systematically projected their cosmologies and traditions onto the structure of the Tarot, leading to its evolution into the divinatory tool recognized today.
In light of Carl C. Jung’s theory that symbolic representations of archetypes serve as windows to our personal and collective unconscious, Tarot divination emerges as a potent practice for gaining insight and wisdom into our psyche. This workshop aims to unravel the culturally diverse history of the Tarot, to decipher its symbolism and structure. Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or new to the realm of divination, this session is tailored to strengthen your understanding of the Tarot’s allegorical symbolism, empowering you to engage with its intricate structure intuitively.
