The Art of Film Photography
Thursdays, August 6, 13 & 20 | 5pm - 8pm
$275 - No makeup dates
In this three-week intensive workshop series, participants will learn the fundamentals of 35mm and medium format film photography plus the historical background of film photography, while developing their own creative vision through hands-on assignments, guided critiques, and portfolio-building exercises. Working with both natural and indoor light, students will gain confidence using a film camera and experience the unique rhythm of analog photography.
Day One: Foundations & Golden Hour We will begin with the practical aspects of shooting film, including camera types, ISO, film stocks, exposure, and a brief history of photography and roll film. Students will then head out on a guided golden-hour photo walk through downtown Delray Beach, photographing within a creative theme developed during class. Subjects may include street photography, portraiture, architecture, and everyday moments found along the way. At the end of class, students will submit their exposed roll to the instructor for professional processing and scanning.
Homework: Shoot one additional roll of film independently, applying the techniques and creative concepts explored during class.
Day Two: Indoor Photography on Film Building on the first week's experience, students will explore photographing portraits indoors in a studio setting using available and continuous artificial light and creative composition. The session will include additional instruction, shooting exercises, and discussion about refining one's visual style. Students will complete another roll of film during class before submitting it for professional processing and scanning.
Homework: Shoot one final roll independently, creating a small body of work that reflects your personal interests and creative voice.
Day Three: Portfolio Review & Group Critique During the final session, students will review their photographs together, select favorite images for printing, and participate in a supportive, constructive group critique. Together we will discuss composition, sequencing, editing, and how to recognize the strengths of each photographer's work. Participants will leave with the confidence to continue shooting film independently, a deeper understanding of the analog process, and a small body of work they're proud to share and add to their portfolios.
**The workshop fee does not include film, professional processing and high-resolution scanning of the rolls exposed during class.
