In conjunction with Delray Beach Climate & Art Week 2021 | Gathering stories and objects through personal exchange, Sea of Oil looks at how oil and gas cultures intersect with everyday life, as we are faced with massive, global climate change.
You are invited to share your story, and to photograph your object in a collaborative studio with lights and a backdrop.
Workshop requirements: Please bring a small item that you think is related to oil and gas in some way to the workshop. No storytelling or photography experience required!
This workshop is for anyone aged 16 and up, and is limited to 12 people.
What to expect: The 90 minute workshop will be in two parts: a story circle where participants share stories related to the objects that they bring, and an open photography studio, where folks set up their show and tell objects with studio lights and a backdrop with assistance from the instructor as they run the camera. Live video feed from the open photo studio is projected on the wall directly from camera, so that everyone can see (as seen in the photo above). Your objects will become part of the story and research.
Laura is planning a publication and exhibition in 2023 of the results of the Sea of Oil Workshops! Participants will be kept in the loop and sent a copy of the publication.
About the instructor: Artist Laura Napier works with photography, video, and participatory forms. She began researching petrocultures when she moved to Houston, Texas, six years ago. She teaches photography at the University of Iowa and is an alumna of the Creative Climate Leadership programme, led by Julie's Bicycle in partnership with global collaborators at Biosphere 2 in Arizona in 2020.
