Guest facilitator Arta Raituma will demonstrate the process of image making using wood as a canvas - resulting in a finished artwork to take home.
This technique allows an image that is initially printed on paper to be transferred to almost any surface. However, some fragments of the image can be lost in the process as well as multiple images can be layered thus creating a distinctive and unique composition. The artist will show and explain the special effects that can be achieved using specifically a wooden surface.
Participants are asked to bring their own prints that they would like to use (images printed on simple paper with inkjet printer, preferably black and white, reversed if text) or they can use sample prints provided. All other materials will be provided (including wood – square and round formats, acrylic paint for possible colour variations of the final art pieces created).
Arta Raituma (1996) is a visual artist from Latvia currently living and working in Lisbon, Portugal. Raituma holds an MA in fine arts having graduated from Art Academy of Latvia, painting department in 2021. She also holds a BA from the same institution. In 2018 the artist took place in an exchange program to study at Accademia di Belle Arte di Venezia in Venice for 6 months.
In her practice she is focusing on the exploration of the sublime in nature and liminal states as well as creative placemaking through engaging with communities and investigating relationships between natural and urban environments. The core medium of Raituma’s daily practice is wood burning often combined with painting and organic materials. In 2022 Raituma worked as a guest lecturer at Art Academy of Latvia.
Collage Working Club (CWC) is a weekly open workspace for artists working in the medium of paper. Organised in the format of alternate ‘drop in’ sessions and workshops masterclasses, it will have both a regular facilitator whilst also involving the artist community in the sharing of knowledge and skills. Providing materials, education and connections is the primary aim of CWC, and it will do this through the interdisciplinary art of collage as both an art form and a tool for personal growth.
The group occupies a physical space at Largo Residências, working with Residências Refúgio, a cultural and social project in Arroios, Lisbon.
