Join us for an interactive workshop on developing care-centred approaches for 'high risk' ethics applications and beyond
About this Event

The TCSG is delighted to host this two-hour interactive workshop on preparing 'high risk' ethics applications led by a panel featuring researchers from all career stages. This workshop also engages with the limitations of the ethics application process when it comes to the ethics of care for researchers themselves. This workshop is open to all PGRs, academic staff, and professional service staff.

Tea, coffee, and nibbles will be provided!

Workshop Description

This workshop explores the gap between institutional ethics requirements and the experiences of researchers by focusing on some of the silences around working with human subjects but also the overlooked aspect of the ethics of care for researchers themselves. It examines common challenges such as how to anticipate and mitigate harm, how to navigate informed consent in complex power dynamics, and how to acknowledge risks not just to participants but to the researcher as well. Ethics forms rarely prompt consideration for the emotional toll for those on the receiving end of emotionally-charged interviews, stories of hate and violence, or even pleas to make a difference.

This workshop positions ethics as an ongoing, relational commitment to care, responsibility, and reflexivity throughout the research process. Workshop participants will leave with:

• Tools for writing more reflective and care-centered ethics applications

• Strategies for identifying and managing emotional risks in research

• Approaches to embedding trauma-informed and culturally responsive ethics

• Insight into institutional limitations and how to navigate existing structures in a way that centres ethics.
