A mindful frame by frame art making workshop
Beginner and/or Intermediate Animators:

About the Workshop
Through a meditative and mindful approach, this workshop focuses on gathering natural materials like leaves, flowers, moss, feathers, rocks etc. to create unique stop motion animations.
Inspired by our grounding connection to the land, participants are asked to reflect on this important relationship and how it relates to storytelling and artistic exploration.
Then, participants will be led through the frame by frame creative and technical process of how to bring their ideas to life. Including: how to gather and prepare organic materials, animate in Dragonframe - an industry leading stop motion animation software, and how to utilize a light table to highlight the various tonal values and unique details found in natural items.
In the end, participants will have their very own animated sequences and have a better understanding of what this playful and experimental approach has to offer.
About the Instructor
Cristal Buemi is a Puerto Rican Canadian Latinx multimedia artist, who holds a BA from Toronto Metropolitan University and an MA from Bau, Design College of Barcelona. While multidisciplinary by nature, (stop motion animation, video, photography, collage and digital design), her work pushes frame-by-frame boundaries by exploring the materiality and inherent beauty found in the minutia, through a mixed media lens. Both her collaborative and individual work have been exhibited worldwide including its inclusion in The New York City Independent Film Festival, Animac (Spain), Harbourfront Centre’s Pandemic Postcards Series and broadcasted on AMC.
Cristal’s passion for pedagogy and creative expression have enabled her involvement in the art education community with various organizations and schools such as TIFF, Toronto Animated Image Society (TAIS), OCAD University, York/Sheridan Design and Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada. As a facilitator she has had the opportunity to work with participants of various ages and backgrounds by leading artistic workshops, talks, camps and courses to help advance their creative practices.

Required Materials
- Participants will have an opportunity to gather natural materials during the workshop, but are welcomed to bring in anything that inspires them. (Examples: leaves, grass, moss, flowers, petals, feathers, rocks, gems, branches, shells, corn husks, fruit or vegetable peels etc.)
