About this Event
Join fellow writers at Village Books and Paper Dreams in Fairhaven for a one-of-a-kind workshop with author and teacher Matt Bell!
From Scene to Structure: Strengthening Your Story at Every Scale
In the morning, class will focus on story and plot structure, looking at successful ways to design or revise a plot to maximize its dramatic potential, as well as how to use tools like synopsis, the logline, and the outline to refine and clarify your story and to successfully communicate it to others (as in a query letter or story submission).
In the afternoon, the class will drill down into scene theory, talking about what makes a great scene, how good dialogue works, and how to better position your protagonist to take stronger actions and make more meaningful choices. There will be time for short writing exercises, sharing of work and ideas, and for Q&A throughout the day.
Matt Bell is an award-winning author of contemporary and speculative fiction. He's published four novels, and his most recent, Appleseed, was selected as a New York Times Notable Book. His short stories have appeared in The New York Times, Esquire, and American Short Fiction. His book for writers, Refuse to be Done, takes the mystery out of writing, and contains strategies and tactics from drafting the initial conception, revising the work, and polishing the language. His approach is applicable to all forms of creative writing, both novels and short stories, fiction and narrative nonfiction. Bell is a professor of creative writing at Arizona State University.
