About this Event
This workshop is part of the exhibition programme Portraits of Slovak and Czech Britain. Taking place on Friday, 19 September 2025, it is a special event for children, ideal for primary or secondary school groups. The session is designed to boost creativity and promote cultural understanding through craft, combining a guided exhibition visit with a hands-on creative workshop led by multidisciplinary artist Tereza Bušková.
Tereza, a Czech-born, Birmingham-based artist, is known for reinterpreting Slavic traditions and rituals through performance, print, and craft. Her work blends richly decorated costumes, symbolic motifs, and community participation to bring ancient customs into contemporary contexts.
Portraits of Slovak and Czech Britain (17 to 22 September) celebrates the stories, culture, and creativity of Slovak and Czech communities living in the UK. Through photography, the exhibition explores themes of migration, identity, and resilience, sharing powerful portraits and personal journeys.
Workshop Structure:
Following a 30-minute guided tour of the exhibition, pupils will take part in a creative session inspired by Mokoš, the Slavic goddess of women, fertility, and the earth. The workshop begins with a short introduction to Slavic mythology and the role of traditional symbols in everyday life. Pupils will then use accessible materials to create their own symbolic artwork or object, drawing on Slavic costumes, ritual objects, and decorative patterns.
Workshop Aims:
- Support cross-cultural learning through interactive, creative activities
- Show how heritage can be preserved and reimagined through art
- Offer pupils the chance to meet and learn from a professional artist
- Provide a tangible outcome – each pupil will take home their creation
Perfect for school visits, this workshop connects visual arts, cultural education, and storytelling in an engaging and accessible way.
The workshop is by donation; pay what you can. Free entry is also welcome. :)
