Collected Summer: A Memory-Keeping & Bookbinding
August 1 | 10:30 AM–1:30 PM
$75 - All bookbinding materials and collage supplies are included.
Inspired by junk journaling and artist books, participants will combine photographs, writing, and collage to create a hand-bound keepsake of their summer experiences. Through guided reflection prompts, we'll consider questions such as: Where did you go? Who did you spend time with? What did you learn? What were the highs and lows? How do you wish to remember this season?
The workshop begins with an introduction to artist books, photobooks, and hand-bound journals, including examples from artist Andrea Sarcos's collection. Participants will discuss concepts for their journals before learning the fundamentals of saddle stitch bookbinding through a step-by-step demonstration. Working together, we'll bind our books by hand and then spend the remainder of the workshop filling pages with photographs, writing, collage, and meaningful objects collected throughout the summer.
Participants are encouraged to bring photographs from this summer, along with any ephemera they collected along the way: receipts, tickets, maps, brochures, stickers, postcards, notes, pressed flowers, or other keepsakes. If your summer is still unfolding, consider leaving a few blank pages to continue documenting memories in the weeks ahead.
