INVITATION Hope in Motion
A Workshop on Making and Moving Flags
Join choreographers and pedagogues Marie-Andrée Robitaille and Irene Gregoriou for an interactive workshop where we’ll explore movement, collaboration, and climate actions through Making and Moving Flags Together.
This workshop is part of the residency Semaphore Dialogues: Signals of Change, where we draw parallels between the semaphore system in the Baltic Sea and our collective ability to communicate and move together. The semaphore serves as a metaphorical entry point for reflecting on signs, signals, and our capacity to engage in climatic transitions.
When: October 21st and October 28th 2024
Time: 16.00 to 18.00
Where: Frihamnstorget, Södra Hamnvägen 5, 11451 Stockholm
Cost: Free (Limited spots, registration required)
Registration link: https://forms.gle/UPXqBHnN7NYP67Qu8
Note: if you wish to book the workshop for a group, at your premisses, at another time, please contact: [email protected]
Workshop Highlights
- Introduction to semaphore signals and their relevance to climate change
- Hands-on flag-making and choreographic exercises with semaphore flags
- A discussion on "hope in motion" and how we can collectively navigate change
- Gathering and sharing hopeful messages for the future
Through this workshop, we aim to spark reflection and practical skills for meaningful responses and collective actions to move together toward a more sustainable future.
No prior experience is needed—everyone is welcome!
About the Residency:
In Semaphore Dialogues: Signals of Change Marie-Andree Robitaille examines the historical semaphore networks in the Baltic Archipelago, using them as entry points to reflect on communication in the context of the planetary challenges we are facing. The project aims to transform the narrative around climate changes, foster meaningful responses, develop abilities for moving together within a climatic transition while contributing to the emergence of an ethics of movement.
Supported by:

Bio:
Marie-Andrée Robitaille is a multidisciplinary artist, pedagogue, and researcher. She holds a PhD in Fine Arts, specializing in choreography within performative and media-based practices, from Stockholm University of the Arts. Marie-Andree Robitaille currently explores circus arts' epistemic, ontological, and ethical specificities through a Posthuman lens and New Materialist approaches to composition and performance. The project advances a philosophy of circus that highlights circus-specific kinetic, aesthetic and embodied knowledge, situating circus arts as hopeful practices for the future.
Irene Gregoriou is currently working at the Blivande participatory platform for the development of community-centered projects and dance initiatives. She holds a bachelor in Pedagogy from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
