Workshop | Abstraction and the Art of Mosaic with Beatriz Jaramillo

Join ceramic artist Beatriz Jaramillo for a hands-on workshop inspired by Margaret, Esther, and Helen Bruton's innovative approaches to traditional mosaic techniques and other diverse media. The workshop begins by looking closely at artworks in the exhibition , using drawing and other activities to delve deeper into the Brutons’ processes. Participants then have the opportunity to experiment with mosaic materials to create a personal mosaic trivet inspired by the ways the artist-sisters fluidly transitioned between figurative and abstract art.

This workshop is open to participants 16 years of age and older. All materials are provided. Previous mosaic experience is not required.

About the Teaching Artist

In her work, Beatriz Jaramillo addresses landscape as metaphor and modality, highlighting the tensions produced by the artificial separation between nature and culture, and inviting viewers to rethink their relationship with nature. Jaramillo integrates art, science, and technology with community participation to inspire meaningful dialogues about environmental issues. Her artwork has been exhibited in several galleries and museums in the US and Colombia. Jaramillo studied Fine Arts in her native Colombia and in Los Angeles; she received an MA in Art Education and an MFA in Studio Art with an emphasis in Sculpture/Ceramics. She has served as a teaching artist at Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Norton Simon Museum (CA), as well as a faculty member teaching ceramics at California State University Los Angeles.
