Author Karen V. Hansen, PhD will give insights into this multiracial working-class school in California in conversation with her classmate Robert Handa, reporter at NBC Bay Area News. Opened in 1956, Sunnyvale High School, the second public high school in Sunnyvale, followed a groundbreaking approach during a time of interracial tension in the 1960s and 70s with the desire to achieve collaboration between students and educators, aiming to reduce violence and enrich the curriculum. The inclusion of US Black history and Mexican American literature as well as increasing girls’ access to sports engendered pride and persistence in the students.In her new book Working-class Kids and Visionary Educators in a Multiracial High School, Hansen lets the students and educators from the 25-year life of the school share their experiences and the impact the school had on their lives.
Karen Hansen is a native Californian and earned her PhD from UC Berkeley and an MA, BA, from UC Santa Barbara. She is a professor of Sociology and Women’s and Gender Studies at Brandeis University. Hansen has written several books about social issues, community, gender, and class.
Robert Handa was named 2015 Reporter of the Year by the Associated Press, won several national journalism awards and received several Emmys. He was included in the Asian American Journalists Association’s (AAJA) Honor Roll of Pioneers in Journalism.
Hansen will have copies of her book for sale and signing. There will also be vintage yearbooks from Sunnyvale High School for sale.
