About this Event
Led by Hina Fazal, Doctoral Student (University of Malaya) and Visiting Junior Fellow, (CrimSL, University of Toronto).
In this work-in-progress series, drawing on earlier conceptualizations of police legitimacy, Hina Fazal will examine whether police violence is also a significant component of police legitimacy in a postcolonial context such as Pakistan, alongside the previously proposed factors. Her discussion moves beyond earlier procedural accounts of legitimacy to explain how the illegal use of force becomes normalized as a tool of governance. Her study addresses questions such as: How do police justify extrajudicial violence? Under what conditions does the public condone and endorse such violence?
Free. All welcome, registration required.
Light refreshments provided.
