About this Event
Work – a conference is a one-day conference about work. Taking place as part of IDEAS WORK, to foster ideas and encourage questions about what is work, and what is its purpose? Why are we so obsessed with it? or with those not participating? What are its values and rewards and the conflicting ideas and issues which surround it? What about those activities that don’t get counted as work (waged labour)? How well does the current work market address the needs and desires of young people? How do workers’ rights work and who for? and can the idea and rules of work be expanded, challenged or changed?
When we say conference, think relaxed but informative, with good food – provided by a young social enterprise, taking place in a slightly different space to the usual conference, situated amongst props and structures made from cardboard created in Occupy – a space temporarily occupied by young people, in Baltic Creative, L1, Liverpool to try out ideas with social value.
We would like Work – a conference, to offer up a generous space where ideas are explored, stories told, experiences exchanged, feedback sought - encouraging input from young people about what their experience of work has been and hopefully initiate ongoing conversations around what is the purpose, role, emphasis, models of work for their future.
Work – a conference will take place during and as part of Occupy.
OCCUPY is an occupation of space in Liverpool for 18 – 24+. A self-contained shop space is provided for the month of September, to try out new ideas with a social agenda or benefit. The title Occupy, recalls and references the Occupy movement of the 2010’s which took over public space for debate, community and protest. Occupy is a pilot which forms part of a wider project for young people ages 5 – 24+ called IDEAS WORK which introduces them to the growing social economy and offers a route in, if they find their idea does indeed work and they’d like to pursue it.
IDEAS WORK is the young ideas arm of Kindred-lcr. Currently in its pilot stage, IDEAS WORK introduces young people, age 5 to 24+, to the social economy. Using space, workshops and events. Throughout IDEAS WORK cardboard boxes are being used – as an adaptable material and a symbol of waste. In Occupy they will be used to occupy the space in the Baltic physically and will form a backdrop for Work – a conference.
