About this Event

Words Under Siege: Translating and Publishing Ukrainian Literature in a Time of War – a lecture by HURI Visiting Scholar Marta Gosovska

This lecture explores the history of Ukrainian literature in translation, tracing its journey from early English editions to contemporary laureates. It highlights how, since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion, translation has evolved into both a cultural strategy and an act of political will.

The presentation also examines the challenges faced by the Ukrainian publishing industry amid ongoing war, including destruction of printing infrastructure and the mobilization of literary professionals into armed service, demonstrating how the industry continues to operate, adapt, and grow under these conditions.
