About this Event

Join SCOPE's 'WORD TO THE PEOPLE' Book Club!

Word to the People is SCOPE’s newly launched club that uses literature as a tool to challenge mainstream myths, uplift marginalized truths, and explore Black and Brown social issues.

For this cycle, we are diving into All About Love by bell hooks at LORE Leimert Park

Why this isnt your average book club:
  • Multimedia Deep Dives: We analyze the book alongside music videos, speeches, and articles to decode complex social issues.
  • Community Dialogue: We connect our featured books to the everyday realities and stories of South LA residents.
  • Hands-On Art: We don't just read; we create. Every cycle wraps up with an accessible creative activity to help participants express and reflect at the end of each reading cycle.

Together we will:
  • Connect theory with South LA lived experiences
  • Deepen community bonds
  • Integrate art as a tool for reflection and social change
  • Advance media literacy

Come for the book, stay for the dialogue. FREE FOOD while supplies last. Space is limited—reserve your spot today!

Strategic Concepts in Organizing and Policy Education (SCOPE) is a social justice non-profit based in South Los Angeles. We build grassroots power to advance social and economic justice for Black and Brown communities across Los Angeles.

We do this by organizing communities, developing local leadership, building strategic alliances, and strengthening capacity through training and education. Our goal is to ensure South L.A. residents have an active voice in shaping the policies that impact their lives and the quality of life in our region.

Our work is grounded in the values of justice, respect, responsibility, integrity, and voice.

About the book: All About Love: New Visions (2000) discusses the aspects of love in modern society. From our flawed understanding of what love is to our misguided expectations of romantic love, author bell hooks examines common barriers to love and explains the steps individuals need to take for society to become more loving and nurturing.

About the author: The late bell hooks was a professor, writer, social activist, Black feminist, and cultural critic whose work focused on sociology, education, gender, and race. NOTE: ‘bell hooks’ is purposefully lowercase. This was the way she always wrote it
