Woodland Heritage and Williams & Cleal welcome you to learn about growing and using timber.

At James Wood
A tour of the Woodland Heritage demonstration woodland
James Wood is being created from a generous bequest from James Stratton. The wood is owned and managed by Woodland Heritage, to demonstrate the value of productive woodland as an increasingly important resource for the United Kingdom.
The woodland will provide fine timber as a primary crop. It will also provide education, carbon capture, flood resilience and an increase in biodiversity.
James Wood is located in Somerset, between the Quantock Hills and Exmoor National Park. The land comprises around 85 acres of former farmland and unmanaged woodland. Scroll down to read more about our ambitious planting plans.

At Williams & Cleal
Discover the Art of Fine Furniture Making
Williams & Cleal open their renowned workshops to the public for a workshop tour. Nestled in the picturesque Somerset countryside, guests will witness first-hand the artistry and precision that go into the fine furniture pieces we and our students design and make.
Workshop experiences will last for approximately two hours. Our expert tutors will lead a talk and Q&A session followed by a workshop tour, allowing you to see our studios, machines and tools up close, as well as taking a peek at current projects in progress and a display of finished furniture pieces made by our staff and students.
You’ll see woodworking technique demonstrations by our tutors and have the chance to participate in making a small simple piece to take home with you. We'll also have refreshments, tea and cake available on the day! Whether you're a woodworking enthusiast, an aspiring furniture maker or simply curious about the craft, our open day will be a great insight into fine furniture making and all we do here at Williams and Cleal.
