Join us to learn the basics of woodcut printing and create your own custom carved block to take home. You’ll also have the chance to collaborate with classmates to design one-of-a-kind printed garments.
Woodcut carving (the process of cutting a design along the wood grain) is a pre-industrial printmaking technique practiced around the world. In this class, students will learn fundamental carving techniques using hand tools while creating their own custom design (approximately 6 to10 square inches) that can be printed on paper or fabric.
We’ll cover carving safety, tool care, and ink selection, then move into hand-printing techniques for both paper and fabric. Participants will also learn how to annotate fine art prints.
At the end of class, students will have the option to print on fabric. Bring a t-shirt, tote bag, or other garment you’d like to embellish! You’ll be able to print both your own design and your classmates’ designs to create a collaborative, wearable artwork.
Participants will leave with their original woodblock, finished prints, custom clothing, and the skills to continue printing at home.
Instructed by printmaker Jo Becker from Bellingham.
