Event: Word Turning: Create Your Own Craft Knife Handle

Description: Join us at Twin Cities Maker for a hands-on workshop where you'll learn how to craft your very own knife handle. Kevin from PersonMakeObject.com will guide you through using a lathe, faceting jigs, and/or hand tools to produce a wood handle of your design to be paired with a brass craft knife hardware kit that holds Swann-Morton and xacto style replaceable blades.

The resulting knife can be used for all manner of crafts and making - it's like an xacto, but really freaking nice!

Hardware kit and prepared turning blanks will be provided: ~$30 value.

Experience Level Recommended: Some wood turning experience may yield a better product, but a complete novice should be able to get a handle done in this class.

Skills You'll Learn:

Lathe spindle turning, lathe tool selection and use, lathe work-holding strategies, indexed lathe faceting, free-form metal shaping on wood lathe, jig and fixture design and ideation. Possibly bandsaw, chopsaw, and drill press if students decide to prepare their own turning blanks.

Items to Bring/Wear for Class

Comfortable shoes (you will be standing for a long period of time)

Lathe appropriate clothing - avoid loose fitting sleeves/tops/jewerly,

Dust mask/respirator

About the Instructor:

Kevin Groenke managed facilities and instructed students in use of fabrication tools and processes at the University of Minnesota's College of Design for 25 years. Now "retired," Groenke putters about in his home shop/studio trying to design and make useful and beautiful things under his "PersonMakeObject" identity. Groenke is an active member of the Minnesota Woodworkers Guild and the Minnesota Woodworkers Expo planning committee.
