Wood splitting work party
Advertisement
We're turning our downed trees into firewood! We have a gas splitter, but we'll need people to operate it, & people with chainsaws to help cut wood to size, people to help move the split wood, etc. More splitters, mauls & hand splitters are welcome, too. (We're considering getting a chipper, too, to mulch small stuff.) Bring gloves, safety goggles, etc.
We used to have a serious policy against burning ground wood, leaving fallen trees to return to earth. W still leave trees that fall deep in the woods alone, except for clearing paths or the stream. But for trees that fall or have to be cut in the "peopled" areas close to the festival field and driveways, we've been harvesting for firewood, fencing, furniture etc.
We have a lot of trees already down and more dead and dying trees marked for cutting. Between emerald ash borers, windstorm, last spring's tornado, and trees just dying of old age, our tree canopy has changed, and we have lots of wood on the ground that can be converted into firewood. It's another way of stewarding the land for safety and to give new trees room to grow.
And of course, you can earn tokens, doubled if you bring your own power tools, that you can use for membership or festival fees. You're also welcome to stay for Saturday dinner by the long hall.
Hopefully, this will be the first of several such work weekends over the summer and fall.
