Wood Engraving - in collaboration with India Rose Bird
About this Event
Tutor: India Rose Bird
Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th December
10am–4pm (with a one‑hour lunch break)
Join us for a relaxed, hands‑on weekend exploring the art of wood engraving. Perfect for beginners, this two‑day course offers a more in‑depth introduction, giving you time to carve, refine and print your own original designs. Whether you're learning a new skill or simply want a creative weekend making something by hand, this is a welcoming introduction to one of the oldest printmaking traditions.
About the Course
Across the weekend, you’ll work through the full process of wood engraving at a comfortable pace. We’ll begin with a short overview of the technique’s history and its use in book illustration and fine‑art printmaking. You’ll learn how to use basic engraving tools safely and effectively, practise mark‑making on end‑grain blocks, and explore how contrast, texture and tone are created through different cuts.
You’ll be provided with a sample end‑grain block for practice and a secondary lemonwood block for your final design. All prints will be hand‑burnished - we will not be using a press.
You can choose to spend the weekend slowly refining a single piece and printing an edition, or experiment with simple two‑colour reduction printing if you’d like to explore layering. By the end of the course, you’ll have a small edition of prints and a solid understanding of the core skills needed to continue developing your wood engraving practice.
