Design, construct, and decorate a wooden box for the purpose of holding flowers, plants, or other beautiful things. Master measuring and marking wood, hammering nails, and using a screwdriver to assemble a project. Personalize the exterior of the box to use as a keepsake or a gift for a loved one.
Class instructor Hilary Hontz is a seasoned educator with over 17 years of teaching experience. She has taught nearly every age group, from kindergarten to college students, and continues to pursue her love of teaching at both Purdue University Fort Wayne and the University of Saint Francis. Along the way, Hilary found a passion for woodworking and has developed her skills as a woodworker over the past 7 years. She learned her love for woodworking at the makerspace, Tek Venture. At Tek, she benefited from the experience of having a space to cultivate her woodworking skills in the safety of a community environment. She has learned techniques, organization, safety, and maintenance from basic woodworking skills to advanced woodturning from her grandfather who has extensive experience as a pattern maker and woodturner. With the combined skills of teaching and woodworking, Hilary has also taught many beginners how to turn a vessel, build their own wood project, and operate safely in a woodshop.
