Come journey into the lives of Tennessee Valley women from the 1800s at Burritt on the Mountain! Step into the authentic log homes and delve into the real stories of these remarkable women. Experience their daily life and their many roles. We will learn the art of making clothes from spinning, dyeing, weaving, and sewing. This exhibit will run all day at the Chandler Log Home with demonstrations at 10:30, 12:30, and 2:30. You will engage in hands-on activities such as dyeing cloth and sewing.
Transition into the world of Women’s Fashion and the life of a seamstress located in the Rosenwald School House. Gain insights into the artistry and skill required for creating clothing from scratch. Explore period fashion, from practical everyday attire to elaborate garments. Then dress your very own vintage paper dolls.
The League of Women Voters of Alabama will also present Alabama Women’s Journey to the Right to Vote exhibit throughout the day in the Rosenwald Schoolhouse. Witness the courageous movement of the suffragist women as they fought for the opportunity to vote.
Try your hand at women’s gardening and barnyard jobs like milking our faux cow, Boxy. Learn what it was like to run the household without modern-day conveniences. At the end of a busy day, see what the ladies liked to do for fun as we discover some of the various displays of folk arts and crafts in our Blast in the Past parkwide exhibit.
Burritt on the Mountain invites you to immerse yourself in history and discover the enduring legacy of these remarkable individuals. Crafts and activities are included in general admission or free for Burritt members.
