An evening of chamber music by Schumann, Clarke, Bonds, Shaw and Bolcom performed by Emily Sinclair and friends.
About this Event

We devised this program to highlight women composers and poets of the 19th, 20th, and 21st century, using the unusual combination of soprano, viola, and piano. We begin with a new piece being written for us by Chris Pratorius-Gomez on a text of Pulitzer Prize winning poet Mary Oliver, followed by several beautiful Lieder of Clara Schumann. We continue with Rebecca Clarke’s 1919 Viola Sonata, a core piece of the viola repertoire, and one of the great pieces of chamber music from the 20th Century.

The second half begins with recently published Songs of the Seasons by Margaret Bonds. Bonds wrote the first two songs in the 1930s to poems by Langston Hughes; the cycle was completed in the 1950s with lyrics provided by Hughes for the occasion. The songs languished in a basement for decades, but were published at last in 2021. While definitely art songs, they draw on blues, jazz, and musical theater traditions as well.

Caroline Shaw’s beautiful In manus tuas adds a contemplative note to the program, as the violist adds her voice to her instrument’s, in this work by one of the most important young composers of our time. Finally, the whole ensemble joins together again for William Bolcom’s epic work exploring life and death, with settings of poems by Maya Angelou, Emily Dickinson, and Jane Kenyon.
