Women's Circle: The Dress You Never Wear | Getting Dressed in the Body You Have | North London
About this Event
It is the third week of February.
Which means you are seven weeks into a year that has been telling you, since the first of January, that your body is a project. New year, new you. The gym you joined and have been to twice. The thing you were going to give up. The before photo you took and have not looked at since.
By now most of that has quietly collapsed. And what is left, for a lot of women, is not freedom. It is a quiet sense of having failed at it.
This morning does the opposite of all of that.
What we are actually going to do
Nothing here is about size. Nothing here is about looking a certain way. Nobody is styled, nobody is fixed, and nobody is told what suits them.
First we say the rules out loud, the ones you were given about how a woman should dress. Said in a room, they often turn out smaller than they sound in your head, and they belong to somebody else.
Don't wear that, you'll get the wrong kind of attention. Black is slimming. That's a bit much, isn't it? Not with your figure. Mutton dressed as lamb. Save it for a special occasion. You would look lovely if you just lost a bit.
Two questions, to answer out loud or quietly to yourself. Whose voice is that in. And is it true.
Then some slow work with the body, which is what makes this different from a styling session. What your body actually does when you know you are going to be looked at. Some of us pull the belly in. Some round the shoulders. Some lift the chin and go hard. Some go very still and narrow.
Then, one at a time, we let each of those go, and find out what it costs and what it gives. Belly out. Shoulders back. Weight even on both feet. Face soft. That is what you look like when you are not defending yourself.
Then you get dressed. Privately, in your own time, in something you brought. Not something that flatters. Something you like wearing.
And then the real point of the morning. One at a time, each woman stands and is looked at. Properly, for about a minute, by the other women, who are on your side. And then each of us says what we actually see. Not compliments and nothing about weight. What the colour does. What changes in you. What it is like to watch you standing there.
You do not have to say thank you. You do not have to agree. Your only job is to stand there and let it be said.
Most of us have never had that.
What to bring
Two or three things from your own wardrobe.
One thing you love and feel good in. One thing you have never dared to wear, the one you have opinions about: too short, too tight, your tummy too big in it, whatever yours is. And, if you have one, the thing you keep for an occasion that never comes.
I also have a collection you are welcome to try, and it is worth knowing what it actually is: long dresses, ball gowns, goddess-style things, clothes made for ceremony rather than for a night out. If you want to put on something extraordinary for an hour, it is there.
And if you bring nothing at all, there is a box of scarves, wraps and bits of jewellery, and nobody will say a word about it.
What this is, and what it is not
You change privately, behind a closed door, and you choose what you put on. You can stay in exactly what you arrived in for the whole morning and still do every single part of this.
This morning is about being looked at, not touched. In this circle the touch is your own hands, getting yourself dressed. Some circles in the year include touch between women, always asked for and always your choice. This one doesn't. Nothing is photographed by default.
There is a full-length mirror in the room. Nobody is sent to it, and plenty of women will not want it, which is fine and unremarkable.
You can pause, rest, sit down or step out at any point, and you never have to explain why. The being seen part can be done sitting down.
A note on the bodies in the room
Several of the women here will be in the middle of something. Menopause. Weight that has changed. Illness. Grief. A body that is not the one they had a photograph taken in.
Every sentence in this room is about the body you have today. That is not a consolation, it is the subject.
