Women Who Inspire Portraits by Laura Getter Liss at Prince Street Cafe

As a child I always loved to draw – especially faces. More specifically, faces of girls and women I admired. I took art classes in high school, some in college, and a few when our kids were young. But as life has it, my art took a back seat to a job in publishing, being a mom of three and a yoga teacher. As my kids grow older (and more independent), I feel the pull to my art again. Early in the pandemic (in-between binge watching tv and documentaries), I found myself unexpectedly emotional about the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg – a strong woman who was a tireless and resolute champion of justice and woman’s rights. I was somehow compelled to paint her. Having a paintbrush back in hand was challenging, and frustrating but ultimately wonderful and fulfilling. That was the beginning of this series "Women Who Inspire". Painting women I admire felt like it was the best way I could honor them. As I study each face, I feel I get to know them on a more personal level, and maybe just a little of them will rub off on me. I hope I make them proud. As I get older, I clearly see the importance of my female friends. Lets continue to be creators and change agents. Lets' be loving, and strong multitaskers and most importantly cheering sections for on another.
