Honoring the Legacy: Women Creating Rhythm
At the heart of the Women Who Drum Festival is a story that extends beyond music. It is the story of women who have carried families, communities, traditions, and culture forward through generations. Like the steady pulse of a drum, women have long held the pace—keeping rhythm in times of celebration, challenge, healing, and transformation.
This fundraiser at Miss Eva's Detroit is an opportunity to honor the matriarchs whose wisdom, resilience, creativity, and care continue to shape our lives. Through storytelling, rhythm, fellowship, and shared meals, we celebrate the women who came before us and the legacy they leave in our hands.
The evening will feature live drumming performances, music, and reflections that acknowledge the often-unseen labor of women as culture bearers, caregivers, educators, artists, and community builders. Just as a drummer anchors an ensemble, matriarchs have anchored generations—creating spaces of belonging, preserving traditions, and guiding future paths.
Women Who Drum Festival was founded by drummer educator extrodinaire, Gayelynn McKinney as a space where these stories through drumming can be heard, celebrated, and carried forward. The festival recognizes that rhythm is not only musical; it lives in the ways women nurture community, preserve memory, and pass knowledge from one generation to the next.
By supporting this fundraiser, guests become part of a larger story—one that honors the legacy of our mothers, grandmothers, aunties, mentors, and elders while investing in the next generation of artists, leaders, and cultural stewards.
Together, we gather to celebrate the women who hold the pace, keep the rhythm, and ensure that the stories of our communities continue to be heard.
