About this Event

TUESDAY • MARCH 15 •12:30 to 1:30 PM

Join us as Dr. Candice Mowbray leads audiences through an appreciative look at the accomplishments and contributions of women as players, teachers and composers throughout the history of the classical guitar.

Beginning in the early Baroque and continuing through the 20th century, this lecture spotlights the careers of women such as Francesca Caccini, Emilia Giuliani, Madame Sydney Pratten, Vahdah Olcott-Bickford, Maria Luisa Anido, Ida Presti and Luise Walker. The purpose of the presentation is to celebrate the careers of great women guitarists, give a broader and more inclusive view of the history of guitar, and inspire the inclusion of women and their works in programming and study of the instrument.

ABOUT DR. MOWBRAY

Candice Mowbray earned the Doctorate of Musical Arts in classical guitar performance from Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia and, in addition to performing, has been a dedicated instructor of music at several colleges and schools for over twenty years. An experienced lecturer, her talks have been described as “enthusiastic” and “insightful” by Classical Guitar Magazine and The Morning Call. She has presented talks for numerous organizations and series including the Guitar Foundation of America, Berklee College of Music, Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society, Boulanger Initiative, Ibero-American Guitar Festival, Toronto Guitar Weekend and Marlow Guitar International. She speaks about a variety of musical topics and has been an advocate for women’s contributions to guitar history, giving her first lecture on the subject in 2006 and completing her doctoral thesis about the legendary French guitar virtuoso, Ida Presti, in 2012. Her CD Reverie, which includes music by Presti, was named one of the Top 10 CDs of 2017 by Classical Guitar Magazine, and her writings have been published in Soundboard and Prodigies (publications of the Guitar Foundation of America).
