About this Event
Are you passionate about economics and eager to explore the diverse career opportunities available in the field? Join us at our upcoming event, where professional economists from various sectors will share their insights and experiences, highlighting the vast array of career paths in the public sector, private sector, and academia.
The primary objective of this event is to encourage female economics students to explore diverse career paths and opportunities in academia, public, and private sectors within the field of economics, inspiring and empowering them to pursue both professional and academic careers in economics. Attendees will benefit from dynamic talks led by distinguished speakers from diverse backgrounds. These inspirational talks will provide invaluable insights into the unique opportunities and challenges within each sector, offering practical advice based on their own professional journeys. A key focus of the event will be the gender aspect, addressing the unique challenges and opportunities faced by women in the field of economics.
Our ultimate goal is to inspire, motivate, and empower students with the knowledge and perspectives necessary for success in their careers. By fostering a sense of community, we strive to actively contribute to closing the persistent gaps among underrepresented groups in the economics profession.
The event is open to all students (irrespective of their gender) of the University of Southampton and to people from any department within the school.
This event is sponsored by the Athena Swan Committee of the School of Economic, Social and Political Science (ESPS) of the University of Southampton and organised in collaboration with the Royal Economic Society UK Women in Economics Network (UK WEN).
ESPS Athena Swan: The Athena Swan Charter is a framework which is used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within higher education (HE) and research. Established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment, the Charter is now being used across the globe to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women." (Advance HE). The School of Economic, Social and Political Science is committed to the principles of the Athena Swan gender equality charter and holds a departmental Bronze award.
This event is part of the activities of the AS committee to address gendered challenges that students are facing in admissions, progression, and achievement within our School.
