Our very popular Women in Data and AI Meetup series returns on Tues 18th June – with in person and online attendance available!
We’ve got two fantastic speakers joining us as we welcome Lesley-Anne Kelly, Head of Data Journalism at DC Thomson, and Rachel Close, Senior Responsible AI Manager at the BBC to share their experiences of working in data & AI in the world of media!
Lesley-Anne will share how DC Thomson combines data and journalism to tell compelling stories about everything from Scottish baby names to high street regeneration, whilst Rachel will touch on what it takes to implement a responsible AI approach! We’ll then move onto a fireside chat and Q&A around what it's like working as a data or AI professional in the media.
As always, there will be plenty of time to connect with others in the community, build relationships, share challenges and explore opportunities to support one another.
Event schedule:
17:30-18:00 - Networking with pizza and drinks ?
18:00-18:30 - Talks from Lesley-Anne and Rachel
18:30-19:00 - Fireside chat + audience Q&A
19:00-19:30 - Networking
Speakers:
Lesley-Anne Kelly, Head of Data Journalism – DC Thomson
Lesley-Anne is the Head of Data Journalism at DC Thomson and recently won an international journalism award. Her data journalism team are passionate about making data more accessible for readers. They blend traditional journalism with skills in data analysis, visualisation and strive to be at the cutting edge of storytelling techniques.
Rachel Close, Senior Responsible AI Manager - BBC
Rachel is a Senior Responsible AI Manager, leading the implementation and subsequent operation of the governance and risk assessment framework for Responsible AI at the BBC. This includes chairing the BBC’s AI Risk Advisory Group, as well as conducting AI risk assessments. Her lifelong love of AI started many years ago when her dad handed her books by Isaac Asimov and Neil Stephenson, and given her parents co-founded a Sci-fi society at their university, she never stood a chance of doing anything else. Since her move to Scotland in 2011, she’s been working in governance and risk, primarily within technology and cybersecurity, as well as devoting time to volunteer networks focusing on gender equality and LGBTQ+ representation.
