About this Event

Words & Walks presents, ‘Women Between the Lines; Central Birmingham’. A guided walking tour celebrating the untold stories of women in Birmingham. Explore the city through a new lens, as Words & Walks take you on an interactive tour, shining a light on the hidden voices of women, both past and present.

The tour will be led by Iris Bertz, Director of Bertz Associates and Poet Simone Word Smith who has created a spoken word piece in response to research led by Emily Baldwin. It will start at the Museum & Art Gallery and lead us through the centre of the city highlighting stories from a diverse library of women. The focus will range from the Suffragettes, artists, musicians, through to the modern everyday women who are under-celebrated, yet consistently make a difference. Discover the challenges, triumphs, and be inspired by the history that goes beyond the textbooks.

The tour will finish on New Street, and there will be an opportunity to join us at Medicine to exchange ideas. There will be refreshment available to purchase.

The Walk will start outside Main Entrance of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Chamberlain Square, Birmingham, B3 3DH, and will take about 90-100 minutes, please make sure you wear comfortable shoes.

Women between the Lines is a collaboration between Iris Bertz, Director of Bertz Associates & Simone Word Smith, Poet & Entrepreneur who share a passion for untold stories of women in Birmingham. They often work with a researcher and then collaboratively create a response to the research. Bertz through a walk and Word Smith through a poem. The walk was developed in collaboration with Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

This walk is delivered as part of the Birmingham Civic Society’s Heritage Trails Project, generously funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the W. A. Cadbury Charitable Trust. The walk is free to Birmingham Civic Society Members and open to non-members for £7.50 a ticket.
