About this Event
At our WOCAP Steering Committee meetings, we get into the nuts and bolts of our . You'll learn how the West Oakland community, led by in partnership with the , is working to improve air quality in West Oakland.
What's happening at the Port?
The Port is West Oakland’s most notorious neighbor. It’s one of the busiest ports on the West Coast, and a huge economic driver in Oakland—and for decades, West Oakland’s neighborhoods have been flooded with dirty diesel emissions from the Port’s trucks, cranes, and cargo handling equipment.
The Clean Ports project is providing $322 million in funding to replace over 600 diesel trucks and pieces of cargo handling equipment with zero-emission alternatives. How will this new, clean technology affect West Oakland, and how can we use it as a springboard for to Port to become a better neighbor to our local community?
- You’ll hear directly from Port staff on how they plan to use this $322 million infusion, and how adopting zero-emission technology might affect West Oakland’s air.
- WOCAP contains 37 different strategies to address Port and freight pollution. We’ll explore a few Port-related strategies that still need more work to get off the ground, like optimizing the Port's appointment system to reduce truck idling. Could Clean Ports help us make inroads towards our goals?
- Interested in making the Port a better neighbor to West Oakland? We're developing a leadership program for community members. Participants will pick a local environmental issue that matters to them, and get training on advocacy and climate justice to help them address it. Learn about this new program and share your ideas for what you'd like to see included.
