About this Event

Topic: Wire For Authoritariansim: How Robber Barons Have Always Run America and How to Fight Back
Speaker: Dr. Charles Derber
Did Trump create American authoritarianism — or simply inherit it?
According to sociologist, Dr. Charlie Derber, the United States has long been shaped by concentrated corporate power operating behind the curtain of democratic institutions. Today, he argues, a new generation of high-tech elites is deepening that authoritarian tradition through AI, surveillance, media influence, and economic control.
Drawing from his new book, "Wired for Authoritarianism", Derber will examine how modern capitalism, technology, and political power are converging — and whether democratic resistance is still possible.
Topics include:
- Why authoritarianism has deep roots in American history
- How “Robber Barons” have shaped politics behind the scenes for generations
- The rise of modern tech oligarchs and their growing political influence
- How technology, AI, and social media are reshaping culture, work, and human relationships
- Why loneliness, isolation, and “sociocide” may strengthen authoritarian systems
- Whether meaningful resistance and democratic renewal are still possible
This talk combines sociology, politics, technology, economics, and history to explore one of the defining political questions of our time.
