Winter Songs of UkraineCelebrating 100 Years of Carol of the Bells in San Diego
In 1919 the Ukrainian Republic Capella, the national choir of Ukraine, embarked on a cultural diplomacy mission to spread awareness of the newly independent Ukrainian nation. Directed by Oleksandr Koshyts, the Ukrainian Republic Capella shared Ukraine’s unique choral tradition by promoting the country’s sovereignty from the Russian world.
In January of 1923, the Ukrainian Republic Capella performed in San Diego. This was the first time San Diegans heard the live concert performance of Mykola Leontovych’s “Schedryk”, a new years song with a melody the world has come to love as a Christmas classic. “Carol of the Bells”, the English-worded rendition of the song, stands as a symbol of the beauty and strength of Ukrainian music, culture and people.
The House of Ukraine invites you to celebrate this centennial by enjoying a rozkoliada- the caroling of winter songs at the end of the holiday season as a way to usher in the spring. Special guest performers Balaklava Blues will bring the ancient sounds of Ukraine to San Diego by performing stunning vocal polyphonies from the winter song traditions that are so deeply ingrained in the Ukrainian people. To ensure a prosperous next 100 years, local singers from the House of Ukraine will perform the timeless classic Carol of the Bells by its original Ukrainian text.
All proceeds from the event will go towards continuing House of Ukraine's humanitarian response.

About our special guest performers:
BALAKLAVA BLUES is a musical project showcasing the unique polyphony of Ukrainian rural voice. Lead by Mark and Marichka Marczyk, who met as musicians on Kyiv's Maidan square during the Revolution of Dignity, the band draws on Marichka's knowledge and experiences as a Ukrainian ethnomusicologist, and the couple's combined musicianship. Balaklava Blues' live performances vary from acoustic sets of voice, drum, violin, accordion and piano, to multimedia dance music shows that layer electronic music and video projection onto their signature live traditional singing and instrumentation. Imbued with the intensity, balance, and spirituality of Ukrainian ancestral rural life, Balaklava Blues creates a soundscape that underscores the never-ending blues of the vast Ukrainian steppe. For this concert, Balaklava Blues will be performing their acoustic koliada set (winter songs), which they perform as a quartet on stages and house-to-house as is the tradition.
