The winter solstice is the shortest day and the longest night of our year. This time is celebrated for many reasons, but we are celebrating the solstice because of the bees.

The significance of the solstice for honeybees is that this is the first day of the year that the bees become active again in their colony. The bees use the sun as a calendar and when the days start getting longer again after the solstice, the bees start preparing for the coming season!

Insect pollinators such as butterflies, flies, moths, beetles and bees are essential to our environment and for crop production: Almost all flowering plants need pollinators to reproduce and these flowering plants support thousands of other species.

Several pollinator species are at risk of extinction in Canada. Wildlife Preservation Canada (WPC)’s pollinator initiative is a nationwide multi-species recovery effort that aims to save these important insects from extinction. Since 2013, WPC has worked to establish conservation breeding colonies for at-risk species, collaborated on the development of the Bumble Bee Watch program, hosted educational workshops, spearheaded scientific research and supported efforts to improve or restore habitat.

No physical tickets will be sent out. You will receive an email before the event with detailed instructions on how to get to the event and where to check in.

We plan to make this event as safe as possible. The room is gigantic with plenty of space and air flow.
