Winter is one of the most important times of year for maintaining a healthy, productive garden, and this hands-on session will give you the knowledge and confidence to carry out essential pruning and seasonal management tasks correctly.

Whether you are looking after fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, or a mixed garden, this workshop will help you understand how winter maintenance can improve plant health, encourage stronger growth, and set the foundation for a successful growing season ahead.

Set within our award-winning community garden, the workshop combines practical outdoor demonstrations with classroom-based learning, allowing participants to see techniques in action while understanding the principles behind them. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and discuss the specific challenges and opportunities within your own garden.

The workshop is led by Charlie, our Head Gardener and an experienced horticulture teacher, who brings both professional expertise and an approachable teaching style to the session. This workshop will cover;

• Winter pruning and seasonal garden management
• Pruning fruit trees, including espalier, cordon, columnar, goblet and other common training forms
• Pruning ornamental shrubs, with a focus on summer and autumn flowering varieties
• Creating overwintering habitats for wildlife
• Preparing your garden for the growing season ahead

As an organic garden, we focus entirely on sustainable gardening practices, demonstrating how winter management can support healthy plants, fertile soils, and thriving wildlife populations. You are encouraged to bring your own gardening gloves and secateurs if you have them, as there will be opportunities to participate in practical pruning exercises.
