These programs take place in person.Bring your family to the Missouri History Museum for a fun-filled winter break! Enjoy live performances, hands-on art activities inspired by the Museum’s special exhibits, storytelling, book giveaways, and a family-friendly Noon Year’s Eve celebration.
SCHEDULE:
Wild Winter | Wednesday, December 28 | 10am–1pm
It’s cold outside, but wild animals still have a lot to do in winter—even if it’s just hibernating. Play in our winter animal sensory bins, make a winter animal mask, and participate in animal story time. Enjoy two episodes of the popular PBS television series "Molly of Denali" along with touch tables to learn about how local Native American or Indigenous people have used animals and nature in the winter.
Step Into the Story: "I Got the Rhythm" | Thursday, December 29 | 10am–1pm
"I Got the Rhythm", by Connie Schofield-Morrison, tells the story of a little girl who hears rhythms all around her while she walks to the park with her mother. Join the St. Louis Black Authors of Children’s Literature and the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and dive into a playful rhythmic day of your own at the Museum. Explore the musical history of our city on a scavenger hunt through the "St. Louis Sound" exhibit. Families will enjoy read-aloud story time by the St. Louis Black Authors while a cast member from the Rep performs in tandem with the pages of the book. Participate in a hip-hop-inspired movement workshop, explore an instrument petting zoo, and make music-inspired crafts. The first 200 kids in attendance will receive a free copy of the book, courtesy of Ready Readers!
On the Trail | Friday, December 30 | 10am–1pm
There’s a reason St. Louis is called “the Gateway to the West”: Many people gathered here to buy supplies before making the journey westward, including immigrants and the Exodusters—Black pioneers and former enslaved people from the South. At 11am, enjoy the special performance "Fundisha Family Folktale Theater: Clara Brown", directed and told by Mama Lisa and featuring the cast of Fundisha Enterprises with musicians Abalone Pearl and Dusty James. This musical performance tells the story of Clara Brown, a formerly enslaved African American woman and pioneer leader who traveled through St. Louis. Experience the pioneer lifestyle by dressing up, making an embroidery craft, creating a buffalo mask, and meeting our strolling “cowboy” from Circus Kaput.
Noon Year's Eve | Saturday, December 31 | 10am–1pm
For those of us who can’t stay awake until midnight, join us for a New Year’s countdown when the clock strikes noon. Enjoy art activities and winter-themed games, and stay for a special performance by FIRE DOG before the balloons drop at noon!
